In Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Report this month we hear of moves to protect Pacific waters through international regulations such as the International Ballast Water Management Convention.

Stakeholders like the International Maritime Organisation and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme conducted a workshop recently to train participants on how to manage ballast water from ships. Ballast water is known to contain many harmful organisms that threaten the existence of fragile eco-systems in the waterways. Stakeholders are trying to encourage other Pacific Island Countries to sign the International Ballast Water Management Convention. Only two countries have ratified the convention.

Also in this edition the Land Resources Division at the Secretariat of the Pacific Community makes access to information much easier with the launch of an email-based helpdesk. Information such as pest list data base, biosecurity and export facilitation can be made available to the public via the helpdesk.
