EU High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell speaks to Fiji PM Bainimarama
02:58 am GMT+12, 29/10/2020, Fiji

European Union High representative/vice-President Josep Borrell held a phone call with Fiji’s Prime Minister Voreque Bainimarama Wednesday.

The call took place at the occasion of the 5th EU-Fiji Enhanced Political Dialogue held via videoconference on 27-28 October.

The High Representative congratulated Fiji for celebrating 50 years of independence.

As Asia and the Pacific become one of the most important regions in the world in strategic and economic terms, the High Representative confirmed that the EU will pay increased attention to it at a time of growing regional competition.

Against this background, Borrell and Bainimarama discussed the bilateral agenda between the EU and Fiji, a key country for the EU in the Pacific region, as well as the importance of EU-Fiji cooperation to address global challenges of common interest.

They exchanged views on the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the Pacific Island States and the EU, on the global climate change and ocean governance agenda, and on the importance of upholding the international rules-based order.

They agreed that both sides will remain engaged in order to resolve a few outstanding issues related to trade relations, tax governance and visa facilitation, and pave the way for further enhanced dialogue and cooperation.
