School students across the country are encouraged to participate in the Solomon Islands 2023 Pacific Games Logo and Mascot design competition.

The $10,000 (US$1,240) worth competition for primary and secondary students was launched by the Solomon Islands 2023 Pacific Games Committee last week.

Secretary to the Prime Minister and Chair of the Pacific Games Organising Committee, Dr Jimmy Rodgers formally announced the competition.

“Right at the beginning towards our journey for 2023. For those of you out there the message here we want to invite you to be part of this journey.

“You students in the Solomon, our youth, at this time we want to say that the future of our county is in your hands. We would like you to contribute to the logo that will represent our country at Pacific Games 2023.

“We want you to look at what will be our Mascot, our special identity.”

The winners of the Logo and Mascot Competition including its launch are set for early June before the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa.

“The logo will be for the whole Games. The intention is to launch it and then by mid April, the process to select the winning designs will come in and we are hoping that we will finalise the selection process for the logo that will represent our country.

“When Team Solomon is announced, i think on the 3rd of June we will also launch the logo. And at the same time we will launch the Mascot. The Mascot is our special sign.”

The criterion of the competition includes an original idea from current student designers, and will accept only one entry per school.

Meanwhile, Preparations for the Solomon Islands 2023 Pacific Games is on schedule and will starts soon, says Chair of the 2023 Pacific Games National Hosting Authority Dr. Jimmy Rodgers.

Dr Rodgers said the country is on schedule to host the event.

He made the statement during the launch of the Solomon Islands 2023 Pacific Games Logo and Mascot competition.

“Yes we have enough time to host the games. That includes mobilising the resources we need in order to build the various facilities we have to develop as well as develop Team Solomons.

“Our aim is that when we host the Pacific Games 2023, that is the opportunity for our country to try and get as many medals as possible. We want to try and set a record on medal tally at the Games.

“So it’s not just about building the facilities, its not just about getting the money for the Games. It is also about building the young people, our talents.”

He is confident, finance for the main stadium will be signed early next month.

“The main National Stadium’s financing is just about to be secured and we are very confident we will sign that in the beginning of March. Then the construction will start hopefully with ground preparations before the end of this year.

“Our target is that Stadium to be completed by the end of 2022 or at least the beginning of 2023. So that is the time plan, at least three years for construction.”

Samoa will host this year’s Pacific Games.
