Bring on the Cooks, PNG thrash Vanuatu
4:11 pm GMT+12, 29/06/2009, Papua New Guinea

The Papua New Guinea Pukpuks racked up a cricket score in their 86-12 thrashing of the touring Vanuatu Tuskers at the Lloyd Robson oval in Port Moresby on Saturday.

Full-back Jack Maraha capped off a man of the match performance with three tries and six conversions.

The other try scorers were Edwin Noki (2), skipper Raymond Romalus (2), Alex Haija, Adam Hill, Yaisuo Giheno, Charlie Maip, Chris Hogi, David Eri and Emanuel Gairo Jr.

The sole two tries by the visitors came from winger Rometi Usamoli and flanker Andrew Kalsakau.

The win will now see the Pukpuks play nemesis Cook Islands in the Federation of Oceania Rugby Union (FORU) Cup final this Saturday, in Port Moresby.

Cook Islands beat Niue also on Saturday to head the eastern conference.

The Cook Islanders have had the upper hand over the Pukpuks in recent times and it would take something special to roll them over.

This Saturday’s match will also serve as an International Rugby Board (IRB) World Cup qualifier for the third tier playing nations in the South Pacific.

The winner will meet Pacific Island giants Samoa for the right to enter the next stage of the qualifying process the following Saturday. This match is also scheduled for Port Moresby.

The IRB World Cup is slated for 2011
