World decisions determine Pacific's existence
11:08 pm GMT+12, 11/07/2016, Solomon Islands

The existence of Pacific countries depend solemnly on the decisions the world makes, says Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

He made this statement in light of the appeal made by Pacific Island countries to the world on minimising the effect of global warming with a goal to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees.

“We in the Pacific have chosen to lead that struggle.

“And we can't leave those decisions in the hands of others,” Bainimarama said.

While officially opening the Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF) this morning as the Chairman of the summit,Bainimarama said the efforts and leadership by PIDF leaders would not just benefit them but also the future of children and the entire planet.

Bainimarama says the forum has matured rapidly with its membership reflecting the breadth and richness of Pacific island cultures, economies and experiences.

He said the forum was organised for action.

“We are gathered here today not just as governments, but as one Pacific people, because the PDIF was founded as a place where governments, NGOs, the business community, foundations, the academic community and ordinary citizens can freely exchange ideas - all with the goal of solving our region's most pressing problems,” he said.

Bainimarama said the Pacific has focused specifically and practically on finding solutions for green growth and sustainable development.

“And we have had the wisdom to know that government cannot achieve that alone.

“And we are also a political voice. In our short life so far, PIDF has established itself as a worthy and respected international institution that honestly represents the interests of its members to the world,” he said.
