Kiribati Parliament passes first reading of $8 million appropriation bill

The Kiribati House of Parliament has passed the first reading of the 2017 Supplementary Appropriation Bill of AUD $8,569,194(US$6,450,164)
 
The supplementary bill will be used for the improvement of communications and air transportation links between Kiribati and the outside world, improvement of education and sports for the young generation and payment of government’s outstanding fees.  
 
The bill is also looking at allocating AUD$8 million (US$6 million) for the procurement of the country’s Dash 8 aircraft, AUD$1million (US$752,000) for renovation and expansion works to the aircraft hangar at the Bonriki International Airport, $500,000 (US$376,000) for the inclusion of Christmas Island in submarine cable project for faster internet connections, $500,000 for the students’ loan scheme for students who want to become pilots, engineers and Civil Aviation specialists and $390,000 (US$290,000) for funding a sports tournament in the Line Group and financial support for a team from the group who will be attending the National Championship Games this year on Tarawa.
