The head of Solomon Islands' police force says there are no immediate plans to rearm its officers.
Royal Solomons Police Force Commissioner Peter Marshall says the decision of whether to rearm will be made by the Solomon Islands Government.
He said there are strong feelings on both sides of the issue. “There are many groups who want the police to be rearm, there are an equal number of groups who have a strong desire that the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force is not armed,” he said.
“The Government stance at the moment is that the force is not to be armed and we will await any decision from the Government.”
His statement follows a report from the Solomons Parliamentary Foreign Relations committee, which has recommended that certain special units of the force be re-armed.
It was one 15 recommendations arising from their inquiry into the RAMSI intervention of 2003
